Do you want to play your part in supporting one of the UK’s leading disability charities to achieve its ambition for growth, providing more education opportunities for people with complex disabilities?

Then join National Star as a Governor. We are seeking a number of committed and exceptional people who share our vision of a world in which people with disabilities are able to realise their potential as equal and active citizens in control of their lives. As a Governor you will be part of a team of friendly volunteers who will:

Oversee and monitor the college activities
Ensure safeguarding issues for students and staff are maintained
Oversee the quality strategy of the college
Ensure students have access to a personalised, broad and balanced curriculum which prepares them for their future lives
Agree targets, monitoring progress and raising standards
Ensure correct and necessary policies and procedures are in place

Governors do not carry the legal responsibilities of a Trustee as we have a separate Trustee board.

We are particularly keen to recruit Governors with experience in:

• Staff training

• Beneficiary engagement

• Vocational learning

• Heath strategy / commissioning

National Star is a Disability Confident Employer. We are committed to equality, diversity and inclusion and welcome applications from all sections of the community, including those currently under-represented on our Governing body, which includes people with disabilities and members of black, Asian and minority ethnic communities.

We are looking for new Governors who can combine strategic vision with excellent communication and team-working skills. Governors should be able to demonstrate independent judgement, the ability to act as a ‘critical friend’ and be willing to speak out.

Your commitment to us

The Governing body meets four times a year, generally during the week between 2pm – 4pm. In addition, we have Link Governors that have responsibility for safeguarding, technology and innovation and maintaining contact with National Star in Hereford and Wales. Governing body papers are distributed in advance to allow Governors to prepare for each meeting.

Benefits of joining our Governing body

By joining our Governing body you will have the satisfaction of knowing that you are playing a part in the future development of one of the leading disability charities in England and Wales. Your fresh perspective could help us to see things in a different light and your professional expertise could be utilised to support our staff team in delivering our vision and values.

You will gain a greater understanding of the challenges faced by young people with complex disabilities and have the opportunity to build your professional network.

Governors are volunteers. Out of pocket expenses are reimbursed. New Governors are subject to an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring (DBS) check.
