With more than 1,000 staff working across multiple sites in England and Wales, disability charity National Star is looking to appoint its first ever Internal Communications Officer.

Reporting to the Head of Marketing, you will create a framework to develop and support a lively and comprehensive programme of internal comms. This will involve sourcing, creating and analysing content and developing our internal communications channels; to keep our staff engaged, motivated and informed about what is happening within the charity.

A people person, you will be effective at building strong working relationships with a broad range of staff and have the ability to motivate, influence and persuade at all levels in the organisation.

In particular, you will work collaboratively with our Digital Marketing Executive to improve and develop our staff intranet. Experience of Sharepoint and Microsoft 365, including Teams, will be important for this role.

It goes without saying that you will be an accomplished wordsmith. You will use your creativity and networking skills to plan and implement a range of engagement activities and events that will support all our staff across our sites in Gloucestershire, Herefordshire and Wales as well as our remote working and other programme staff.

 

What you will be doing:

(Internal Communications)

• Produce an internal communications content calendar/plan to ensure regular and timely communications to staff to support our staff retention strategy

• Roll out the action plan developed from our annual staff survey

• Build strong working relationships with staff throughout the organisation

• Develop communication plans to ensure staff are fully aware of our diversity and inclusion strategy and training and development opportunities

• Maintain and develop the staff intranet, liaising with staff from other departments to ensure content is kept up-to-date, consistent and relevant for staff

• Build engagement within the National Star staff Facebook group

 

(Engagement activities)

• Plan and organise monthly events so that staff are aware of the employee benefits on offer at National Star

• Build effective relationships with residential, educational and support teams to ensure they are kept informed of organisational developments affecting their teams

• Monitor and respond to employee reviews on sites including Glassdoor and Indeed

• Launch a staff buddy scheme, recruiting staff volunteers to act as ambassadors, helping new staff to settle into their roles.

• Working closely with the staff recruitment and marketing activities within HR to promote employee roles at National Star and to support the staff onboarding and induction programme, so that new staff have all the information they need to make the most of the opportunities on offer at National Star.

• Initiating and supporting staff social and recreational activities and opportunities – establishing a programme and promoting etc

• Liaising with Managers, Department Heads, Staff Representation (Link) Group members

 

To be successful in this role you will:

• Be an enthusiastic self-starter able to plan, multitask and be comfortable with change

• Have excellent written and verbal communication skills, being able to write engaging and accurate content to meet the needs of a range of different audiences.

• Be able to confidently present to and communicate with people, balanced with listening and diplomacy skills

• Be able to organise events and measure their effectiveness

• Have experience of working in colleague/employee engagement and/or marketing

• Be confident at networking, building relationships across the organisation and with external stakeholders

 

You will be able to work flexibly from our main site at Ullenwood, Cheltenham with the ability for some home working by agreement. Occasional travel to other National Star locations of service delivery or operations of the charity and to attend meetings, conferences, training or external events.

Based just outside Cheltenham, our Ullenwood site has plenty of free parking for staff. No car, no worries! We run a free staff minibus that picks up at key locations across Cheltenham and Gloucester.

The marketing team is known for its creativity and customer-focussed approach in delivering solutions that meet the needs of its internal and external audiences. The friendly team work collaboratively on many projects and there will be an opportunity to fine-tune your marketing and communication skills in this role.
