At National Star, we realise the aspirations of young adults living with complex physical and learning disabilities. Right now, they’re looking for nurses to join us.
Are you ready for a change in your career or healthcare environment? If so, your skills and knowledge would be invaluable for keeping our residents and students healthy and safe. Thanks to your passion for their wellbeing and undeniable drive to deliver high-quality care, they’ll be empowered to experience a world without limits.
There is no such thing as a typical student or resident at National Star. The young people we support are medically complex and have a range of disabilities, including cerebral palsy, ASD, Downs Syndrome, global developmental delay, acquired brain injury and hearing or visual impairment. As their nurse, you’ll share your expertise with the team because together, we make sure each person gets the personalised health care they need to manage pain or symptoms of their conditions so they can live the life they want. For you and us, it’s all about promoting independence and enabling them to study, socialise, enjoy their passions, hobbies and day-to-day activities.
Deliver day-to-day nursing
Be comfortable working alone as an autonomous clinician (alongside skilled care staff) or as part of a small nurse team
Advise and guide our teams on health-related matters
Develop comprehensive health plans
Help the young people manage their medication with their care and support workers
Provide emergency nursing care as required
Undertake medical procedures and protocols
Help students and residents develop the skills and knowledge they need to manage their wellbeing
Liaise with GPs, pharmacies and consultants
Keep records and health-related documentation up-to-date.
Would you describe yourself as confident in making acute clinical decisions? If you’re able to work autonomously in a residential setting and have a desire to make a positive impact, then you’re the nurse we’re looking for. If you have recent and ongoing competency in respiratory care and management of tracheostomy/laryngectomy, that will benefit us. You don’t necessarily need experience working with people with disabilities as we are happy to teach you all you’ll need to know. What we can’t teach, however, is compassion, which is vital for fitting in with our team and way of working.
In return for your guidance and medical expertise, you’ll enjoy a minimum of 25 days paid holiday, plus eight statutory public holidays pro-rata. We support revalidation, and you’ll gain experience working for an outstanding provider with CQC. There’s also:
A welcome bonus of £250 (pro rata) after completing probation
Fitness suite and swimming pool access plus staff clubs such as badminton, arts & crafts and Zumba (for Ullenwood staff, subject to COVID restrictions)
A health cashback scheme, providing money back off select appointments and treatments
Life insurance cover/ Group Life Assurance scheme
Contributory pension scheme
25 days holiday plus bank holidays pro rata
The opportunity to purchase an NUS Extra card for generous attraction, supermarket and retailer discounts.
Join National Star as a nurse, and your care will help create experiences without limits. From the first attempt of administering their own medication to the triumphant achievement of speaking for the first time after an acquired brain injury, the needs of the young people we support are unique. Through the highs and the lows, any moments of pain and all the celebrations, you’ll have supported and enabled their care to enhance the events they love and the social calendar they choose. It’s their life. You’ll make sure they’re living it healthily.
How to apply
At National Star, we know the value of a diverse workforce, and welcome applications from all areas of the community. This includes those with disabilities, and we are a proud Disability Confident employer and are committed to providing equal opportunities. In 2018 National Star received an 'Outstanding' from Ofsted.
Please note that all applicants will be expected to undertake a DBS Disclosure, and undergo the necessary employer checks. The level of disclosure to be applied for will be dependent on your job role and will be discussed with you during the recruitment process but is usually an enhanced level. Where appropriate, the adult and child barred lists will be checked and we will not employ anyone who appears on either of those registers.
We prefer people to submit an online application as this helps support the charity in saving money. Alternatively please send your cv to firstname.lastname@example.org or call our recruitment department 01242 527631 for further information or an application form. If you have a disability and need to apply using an alternative format, or if you have any technical problems with our recruitment system please let us know.
